Apprenticeships (Get an A+ as a life option after HS)
What is an apprenticeship?
An Immediate Job with benefits and training - Dept of Labor "What is a registered apprenticeship?"
Apprenticeships are paid employment with on-the-job training which may include scheduled classroom or college coursework which typically takes 4-6 years to complete.
Apprentices aspire to earn a journeyman certificate for higher wages and ability to become self employed.
Master journeyperson (Iowa master certification) make even more money.
State of Iowa is supporting apprenticeships

Most apprentice positions require person to have a HS Diploma, 18 years of age, National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC test ), & pass drug screening
NCRC test is also ACT's "Work Keys" test, so you can practice for it on this ACT Work Keys Test Prep webpage for free! At Panorama we take the first three parts list on the linked page.
Click red links below for practicing at different test levels:
Panorama gives the NCRC exam to interested Juniors and Seniors each school year (let the guidance office know you want to take it)
The following apprenticeship companies have recruited Panorama HS seniors at one time or another -
They are examples of "Middle Skill Jobs" that hire trained or untrained people, then provide them specific training, so wages increase as certification and skills increase for the employee. Iowa Workforce Development champions these kind of job and educational providers as the type of jobs more HS students need to consider - due to the labor market trends of our geographical area (Statistics on file below - WesternIaCollegeJobTrends-Carroll2014.pdf).

Proctor Mechanical Corporation, contact Deborah Warner (dwarner@proctor-mech.com, ph 515.283.3829), 1100 Hoak Drive, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265, www.proctor-mech.com
V.P. Thomas Proctor visited Panorama 03/16/2016 to share the trades industry in general has aging workforce and needs employees. His company cooperates with ABC of Iowa to educate their employees in an apprenticeship program. They are interested in 18 year old HS graduates who have interest/willingness to learn the plumbing trade. Most of their customers are new schools, hospitals, and companies. Cautious graduates may work for the company as a summer employee to experience the company to help them decide whether or not to apply for full-time employment with benefits in their apprenticeship program. Once employed, apprentices pay for half of their education costs, then once certifications are earned through the education and the employee agrees to stay with company - the company will then pay back the employee those education costs (essentially, free education plus salary & benefits). 2 page brochure with CWebner's notes from mtg.

Iowa Electrical Code requires all electricians to license with the state. New code requires those who do not already hold a journeyman’s license to qualify by completing a US Department of Labor (DOL), Registered Apprenticeship Program. There are 10 DOL Registered Joint Apprenticeship Training Communities (JATCs) currently training apprentices in Iowa. The IEA is training 6 of the 10 (those JATCs are: Des Moines, Dubuque, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Sioux City, & Waterloo/Cedar Fall). A licensed journeyman earns $30.00 per hour with superior healthcare and pension benefits. Earn DMACC college credit while being paid to become certified with IEA.
